Comic Con International Just OFFICIALLY "Nuked the Fridge"
Alexandre Aja
, the Director of Piranha 3-D, was scheduled to show a preview of his movie at Comic Con International in San Diego. The clip includes a scene of a wet t-shirt contest. The people who run Comic Con subsequently crapped their pants, and told him he had to cut the scene or he couldn't show the clip to Comic Con's paid attendees.
Gfest can't help but think that King Kirby would be proud of you Alexandre.
It makes gfest's stomach turn to think that the people that run Comic Con, which the King of Comics Jack Kirby
and his friends started, is trying to stifle an artist's creative expression. It's shameful really.
Gfest has never had a problem with Hollywood's invasion of Comic Con, even though many Comic Con purists have. The merger of comic books and Hollywood was the fulfillment of Jack Kirby's vision, not its demise. But censorship? Well, that's just really, really not cool Comic Con.
Luckily, Aja told Comic Con to shove it, and walked away from Comic Con. Instead, he will debut his movie at the UA Horton Plaza nearby on the same day that Comic Con 2010 opens.

Mattel's SDCC Exclusive Plastic Man Looks Awesome

Gfest loves it's action figures. We especially love our SDCC exclusive action figures. So when Mattel released the exclusive packaging and content of this years DC Comics SDCC exclusive Plastic Man action figure, your friends at Gfest were as excited as Dick Grayson when he became Batman (despite the fact he is a whiny little bitch).
This special packaging has been shaped to look like Plastic Man himself and it comes in a full-color shipper box for safe keeping. But the coolest thing of all? A pair of Plastic Man glasses are included that can be removed from the package and worn by you!
If you do purchase Plastic Man at SDCC, he’ll also come with a special suitcase available only at the show (packed in a separate poly bag). Not just any suitcase, of course… his arms, head and neck can be attached to the suitcase to make him appear disguised as luggage. Inside the suitcase is a chip-art comic book cover from the 75 years of DC Comics.
Head on over to MattyCollector to see all the images of this awesome SDCC exclusive action figure.

Comic Con Accepts $500k Bribe - Someone Call the Tea Party!
San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that the City of San Diego is so desperate to keep Comic Con International, that they are now willing to throw cold hard cash at the event organizers in order to convince them to stay. The offer on the table is $500,000.
If you like the idea, thank yourself, not San Diego. The half million dollar bribe will come from a tax on hotel beds. So San Diego is asking visitors to pay an extra tax so that residents may benefit from the increased business the Con brings to town. This would be on top of the 10.5% hotel tax that San Diego already charges. That simply sucks.
At the urging of Mayor Jerry Sanders, San Diego has budgeted $100,000 annually over a five-year period for Comic-Con, which believes that the worldwide publicity the city gets from the pop culture extravaganza pays dividends in marketing San Diego as a tourist destination.
What's worse, is that Comic-Con organizers actually praised the decision to take the $500k in cash raised from its own customers, instead of from the citizens of San Diego who supposedly will see all the benefit from it.
“We’re obviously very, very grateful for that,” Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer said Tuesday.
Gfest now officially supports a move of Comic Con International. And somebody get Sarah Palin on the phone, because Comic Con officials needs a visit from the Tea Party. Maverick!

Comic Con Is Staying In San Diego
The NBC Affiliate in San Diego is reporting that with a new land deal approved Tuesday, the world's largest comic book convention will likely remain in San Diego. Anaheim had been aggressively pursuing the Con.
The San Diego Board of Port Commissioners unanimously approved a multi-million-dollar land deal that will allow for a $753 million expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, the longtime home of Comic-Con.
Under the deal, the San Diego Convention Center Corp. will pay $1 million upfront to secure a six-acre bayfront site from Fifth Avenue Landing LLC. The SDCCC will then make $500,000 annual payments over the next five years, when the balance will be due.
"I applaud the port commissioners for approving this agreement and recognizing the importance of expanding our Convention Center," San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said. "While there is more work to be done before we can break ground, today's action is a critical step forward."

Bruce Wayne Still Gettin "F'd in the A" by DC Comics
At the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo in Chicago this weekend, the DC Universe Panel gave a glimpse into the future of DCU. One would think coming off Blackest Night the strongest series since the original Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC would be headed in the right direction. Think again!
Everyone's favorite "one-hit Starman wonder," James Robinson is going to continue making us suffer through two series. At the C2E2, Robinson discussed the "War of the Superman," which will replace the regular Superman books in May and feature a war that takes exactly 100 minutes to fight. Wow, since the current Superman books have been so fantastic this story should be riveting!
