DC & Warner Bros. Green Light JLA Movie But With NO Batman or Superman

According to Comic Book Movie, the Justice League Movie Is a Go. Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are already planning a Justice League movie; but with a twist.

Several weeks ago, Warner Bros announced they are planning on fill the gap left by the culmination of the Harry Potter franchise with DC superhero films. With Green Lantern due out in theaters next summer, along with the third installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and a rebooted Superman film the following year, fans were beginning to wonder how soon it would be before these heroes came together into one ensemble movie. Now we're a few steps closer.
A Justice League of America film has been given the tentative green light by Warner Bros. Though the film is still in it's very, very early stages (no script has been officially worked on, but the basic plot is outlined), actors are quietly being pursued to test for the roles. The big surprise is the current team roster: Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. That's right, folks, no Superman or Batman; at least not yet. The film will be used to introduce Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter to general audiences. Both Green Lantern and The Flash movies would have already been released in theaters, so there would be no need to delve into their origins. Either Superman or Batman, or both, could eventually make their way into the script; though at this time the studio is slowly moving forward without their inclusion. Several comics series, including the team's first outing in The Brave and the Bold, have worked quite well without Batman and Superman as a part of the initial team.
What do you think of a JLA movie?  Can it work without Batman and Superman?  The JLA comic book is pathetic right now without Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman or Green Lantern.   That makes me a little skeptical about the team-up described here, but any step closer to a live action JLA movie is a good thing.  Right?

Supergirl and Damien Team-up in SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 and Why I am Starting to Like Damien Wayne

I will be the first to admit, I did not like Damien Wayne when he was introduced as a character into the Batman family. In my opinion, the Bat family was already too crowded with Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, Barbara, Stephanie, etc. I found Damien's character to be the Scrappy Doo or Kazoo of the Batman family.

Now, I am starting to come around about Damien. I like the dynamic he throws into the relationships in and around the Bat family. I especially love the tension between Tim and Damien. The writing of Damien by Grant Morrison Chris Yost and Fabian Nicieza is fantastic. Damien is smart, sharp and very quick witted. Damien's dialogue with Tim is funny and useful to help shape the story of the Bat family in the future. Don;t get me wrong my favorite part of any Tim and Damien encounter is still seeing Red Robin kicks Robin's little pompous butt around Gotham city.

That's why the recently announced team-up of Damien and Supergirl has me really intrigued. I can't wait to read the dynamic between the two. Especially, since Kara and Tim have such a good relationship.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 by writer Joshua Williamson puts the teenage Supergirl together with the talented but rather exasperating new Robin, Damian Wayne. Featuring art by Alé Garza, the issue shows the two heroes facing off against a threat that ties into Blackest Night.

When the issue showed up in October's solicitations, SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 immediately caught the imagination of comics fans, who guessed at how the pair might interact. After all, they didn't get along so well during their brief encounter in Sterling Gates' World's Finest mini-series.

SPOILER ALERT - THIS Major DC Comics Superhero Will Become White Lantern

DC Comics has a history of letting the advertisements for their related merchandise spoil the stories in the comic books themselves.  If you remember, many people first learned that Martian Manhunter J'onn J'onnz was going to become a Black Lantern because of the ad for his action figure put out by DC Direct.

Well, they've done it again.  This time its the folks at Heroclix, who put out some teasers for their new line celebrating DC Comics 75th Anniversary.  Heroclix has really done a tremedous job in capitalizing on the Blackest Night and Brightest Day events by releasing sets very quickly.

So who is set to become a White Lantern?  The answer is Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow.

Now Green Arrow was a White Lantern for a couple of pages in Blackest Night as well, and while that was a cool moment, I don't think that moment alone gets you a heroclix, but maybe I'm wrong.

What I do know is that at the end of the most recent issue of Green Arrow, we see Oliver Queen laying on the ground near the tree with the White Lantern Symbol. He also coincidently has an arrow shot directly through his skull. That's hard to recover from, even if you have a good health care plan.

So, right now he is dead, but I don't really think he's going to stay that way?  Do you?

So instead you bring back Green Arrow in the next issue -- as a White Lantern.

Is this yet another case of the tail wagging the dog, and scooping the story with related merchandise advertising?  Seems like it to me.  This doesn't seem like a hard problem to solve, but it seems that DC Comics is having a very hard time figuring it out lately.  Hopefully that changes soon.

Love this DC 75th Anniversary Variant Cover to Teen Titian #86

Mike Allred created this retro cover to TEEN TITANS #86.  I love the old style feel of this cover.  Simple and beautiful.  I assume this is a variant for DC's 75th Anniversary.  Regardless, I love it.

Arkham Aslyum 2 Has Official Title & Logo

Yesterday, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment announced BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY as the title for the follow-up to the award winning and critically acclaimed videogame BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM.

The game, which will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC next fall and developed by Rocksteady Studios, expands upon the gritty, atmospheric scenery and characterization that catapulted BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM to the forefront. It is set in a sequestered section of Gotham City that has become the home for the criminally insane. Players are introduced to a brand new story that bring together an ensemble cast of characters and villains from the Batman universe, as well as enhanced gameplay features that build upon the ultra-realistic Dark Knight experience that fans enjoyed with BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM.

Watchman Director Bringing MAGE Comic to Big Screen

Watchmen producer Lloyd Levin has acquired the film rights to Matt Wagner’s epic comic book MAGE.

Watchmen producer Lloyd Levin is looking to give another epic comic book series the big-screen treatment. According to Variety, Levin has acquired the rights to Matt Wagner’s MAGE- a reinterpretation of the King Arthur story where the main character, Kevin Matchstick, is essentially a stand-in for Wagner himself.

The Mage series has two volumes released so far, each consisting of 15 issues. Levin plans on adapting the first volume, The Hero Discovered but there’s no mention of whether he also owns the rights to the subsequent volume The Hero Defined or the planned final volume The Hero Denied.

I love this series as much as you can love a series that is years upon years in the making. I am hopeful this all works-out and we get to see it on the big screen.  Are you excited to see the comic become a movie?

Dynamite Announces New Comic - H2O

Dynamite Entertainment announced a new comic book from writer Grant Calof (Hulk Unchained) and artist Jeevan J. Kang (John Woo's Seven Brothers, The Sadhu, Spider-Man: India) entitled, H20.
Set in the not too distant future… When a 100-year global drought devastates the Earth and a failed rainmaking experiment destroys the atmosphere, humankind teeters on the brink of collapse. As the remaining nations wage war over dwindling water supplies and natural resources, two rival scientists on opposite sides of the world discover a lost glacier high in the Andes-- setting off a deadly race to claim and control the planet's last known source of fresh water. The story focuses on Aaron Turner, a brilliant volcanologist with a secret past he'd like to keep hidden. Aaron's known for his radical, sometimes controversial theories and his intelligence is off the charts, but he's trapped in the shadow of his father's brilliance and failures - a burden that may finally lift if Aaron reaches the buried glacier first. But a terrible revelation awaits underground that threatens the very existence of their mission. Created by Liquid Comics and Eric Eisner's, "Epic Cycle" graphic novel imprint.
The book will become available in October, is 72 pages long, and will cost you $6.99.  The premise sounds fairly interesting and it's a one-shot so there is no long-term commitment, but I would wait for some reviews, prior to blowing nearly $7.00 on a book. Let us know what you think?

Quentin Tarantino May Direct THE SHADOW Movie

I remember THE SHADOW staring Alec Baldwin.  t was not a very good movie. Although, Alec Baldwin is a fantastic actor, THE SHADOW was not a good choice to showcase his talents. Now, it is being  reported (or rumored) that a new big-screen adaptation is coming and the project has BIG name director attached to it

According to pajiba, Quentin Tarantino is currently in discussions to direct:
... the person that is now attached to the project is none other than Quentin Tarantino, who is also attached as co-writer. ... The Shadow has never been mentioned among the 27 dozen projects that Tarantino has always been obsessed with. Maybe he loved original radio show and the pulps (which do seem up Tarantino's alley), and maybe he saw Siavash Farahani's script and decided that, if anyone could erase the memory of Alec Baldwin's atrocity, it'd be him. Maybe Tarantino just loves the challenge. Or maybe he's just added this to the huge pile of future possibilities and has no intention of ever directing. All I know is that, for the moment, he is being discussed (and this is a two-way discussion) and or already attached as the future director of The Shadow.
I think THE SHADOW would be very good fit for Tarantino.  I am excited by this rumor and hopeful it comes true. What do you think?

Walt Disney Releases TRON LEGACY Movie Poster

Walt Disney Pictures have dropped an international poster for the forthcoming Sci Fi 3D bonanza "Tron Legacy."  The poster features Jeff Bridges as the first film's hero Flynn, looking like he is in a Wachowski brothers movie.

I remember the original "Tron" movie and back  in my day it was the coolest thing to come along since Ocean Pacific (OP) clothes.  Motorcycles and neon/black lights in 1982 were very cutting edge.  Plus, the video game (we had to leave home and play games in an arcade) was nothing short of mind blowing.

I am very excited to see "Tron Legacy", but I am concerned that it may not translate to the younger demographic that it needs to capture to offset it's huge budget.  I grew up on "A-Team" television series and enjoyed the "A-Team" move, but we all know that movie flopped.   Hopefully, original special effects and very good 3D will carry this movie and allow it to find a younger fan base.  We'll wait and see.

SMALLVILLE Selects Hawkgirl and Deadshot Actors

Smallville is continuing to do what we want the most - more DCU characters. If he ain't gonna fly or wear the suit (which is going to change - please make it so) you have to give me lots of characters within the DCU to wet my appetite. To it's credit, Smallville has interject many characters over the last few years: Green Arrow, Aqualad, Flash, Steel, Doomsday and a few JSU characters.

Kryptonsite.com has reported that actors have been cast as notable DC characters Floyd Lawton and Shayera – AKA Deadshot and Hawkgirl

Playing Shayera will be Sahar Biniaz, a beauty pageant contestant who Kryptonsite notes had small roles in three previous Smallville episodes and in Watchmen. It's not clear if we'll see Shayera's Hawkgirl alter-ego in the episode she appears in, "Shield", which is the second of the season. That episode will also feature Michael Shanks reprising his role as Carter Hall, AKA Hawkman. Also still in question is whether Shayera will appear in the present or only in flashbacks. The character was previously referred to in the two-hour "Absolute Justice" episode, which introduced the Justice Society.

"Shield" will also introduce Deadshot, played by Bradley Stryker. Fans of The OC may remember Stryker as the first actor to play Ryan's brother, Trey, in Season 1 (Logan Marshall-Green played Trey in later appearances). Stryker also played a soldier on the first few episodes of Stargate Universe.

Hawkgirl and Deadshot are just two of several new DC characters set to debut in Smallville: Season 10, including Darkseid, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.

Olivia Wilde Strips Down in Favreau's COWBOYS & ALIENS

Just when you think a John Favreau movie can't get any better, he proves you wrong.

House star, Olivia Wilde is currently shooting Cowboys and Aliens with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. And in one scene, she's will be pretty damn wild..

So reports an enthusiastic Adam Beach, who plays Ford's henchmen in the sci-fi western., "We just finished shooting Olivia Wilde naked in front of a bonfire in front of 500 Apache warriors," Beach says. "That was beautiful. You won't get to see what I saw, but you'll get a glimpse."

Asked about the nude scene, Wilde laughs. "Did Adam Beach talk to you? Adam Beach is the best. Last night, we did a scene where I'm naked in front of a group of couple hundred Apache. Pretty amazing, pretty interesting."

Not that she's only wild west cheesecake in the film, due out next July. "I do kick-ass in this. I love doing action movies ... This movie is so much fun for me.

Three Inception Stars Want to Be the Riddler In Batman 3!

Comic Book Movie is reporting that an inside source from Warner Bros revelaed the stars of Christopher Nolan's latest movie Inception: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Hardy are all competing for the role of The Riddler in Batman 3.

Apparently, the studio is especially keen on allowing Nolan to hire one of the actors because of the extra publicity and attention it would bring to the movie (as did Christian Bale re-teaming with Christopher Nolan in The Prestige for example) while the fact they were all praised for their performances also plays a part.

As with any rumor from an "inside source," it's best to take this with a pinch of salt.  It's already been reported that Levitt is in the running for this role, but seeing Inception, I am leaning more and more towards Hardy as the best fit to play the Riddler. Regardless it is nice that Nolan is looking at three individuals that will play the role very, very well.

NEW Classic Green Lantern Action Figures

As an action figure collector, SDCC is as good as it gets.  Those three days are like Christmas morning for me.  Not only can you purchase the exclusives but you can obtain a first peak at the new series yet to be released.  Case in point, we saw these beauties on display in San Diego.

Expected to arrive in stores in October, the line's first wave is set to include Kyle Rayner, Black Hand, Manhunter, Sinestro Corps members Low and Maash (who come with interchangeable heads) and Black Lantern Abin Sur. Mongul will round out the line, although it's uncertain whether this version will be a reissue or an original sculpt. As with many DCUC lines, this GL wave will include build-a-character pieces, appropriately forming Arkillo this time around.

DC Comics "Elseworlds" Tales Return This Week

For nearly two decades, DC Comics published a series of comics called “Elseworlds.”  They were out-of-continuity takes on many of their most popular characters, and they were a ton of fun.  Mike Mignola's illustrated Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is considered the first Elseworlds comic.

Sure to be fair there were plenty of stinkers in the crowd, but some of DC’s most critically acclaimed and beloved material — JLA: The Nail, Superman: Red Son, Kingdom Come – are all Elseworlds books.

Yet in recent years, Dan Didio has pretty much killed all efforts tell Elseworlds tales.  Luckily, DC Comics promoted both Jim Lee and Geoff Johns to senior management positions, because we now have a new Elseworlds tale coming out this week with Superman: The Last Family of Krypton #1.

Summary:

Returning to a character he's long been associated with, legendary writer Cary Bates explores a different side to Superman's legend in an Elseworlds tale that hinges on the fact that while baby Kal-el has rocketed to the distant planet Earth from his doomed homeworld of Krypton, he was not alone. How does a world handle the emergence of the Last Family of Krypton as Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El make Earth their adopted home?

Who Will Be the New Man Without Fear? Teaser Image

Marvel Comics released a new teaser image Monday for their new Shadowland event.
The image asks “Who Will Be The New Man Without Fear?”, adding “Shadowland brings a major change to the Marvel Universe!”

During San Diego Comic-Con, the company previewed several teasers touting several possible new "Man Without Fear" candidates. Besides Nova, we'll also soon see Black Panther, Kraven the Hunter, Gambit, and Falcon.

As for gfest's pick for who should become the "Man Without Fear", we'll stick with the original - Hal Jordan.

Video Game Character Yearbook Profiles

Andrew Bridgman over at Dorkly posted these hilarious pictures of video game characters yearbook profiles. I love Link's quote,  "I'm gonna go into this temple I'll be right back!" (said seven years ago).  Bomberman most likely never to be allowed in an airport.  Hilarious.

WTF? A FAIRLY ODD MOVIE: GROW UP TIMMY TURNER.

A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner! is an upcoming straight-to-television film based on the animated series The Fairly OddParents, set to air on Nickelodeon in 2011. Unlike the previous films based on the series, this one will be presented in live-action for the first time.

The movie centers on Timmy Turner (portrayed by Drake Bell), but unlike the series, Timmy is no longer a 10-year-old boy — he is 23, still lives at home, and still attends the 5th grade. Timmy's arrested development stems from his desire to keep his beloved fairy godparents, Cosmo (Daran Norris as his animated form and Jason Alexander as his live-action form) and Wanda (Susanne Blakeslee as her animated form and Cheryl Hines as her live-action form), because "Da Rules" dictates that godchildren lose their fairies when they grow up. But when Tootie (Daniella Monet), a formerly nerdy girl who's always had a crush on Timmy, returns to town as a gorgeous grown-up, Timmy finds himself having very adult feelings for her. He must decide whether to grow up and be with the woman he now loves, or continue acting like a child to keep the fairy godparents he adores. In the meantime, Hugh J. Magnate (Steven Weber), a larger-than-life oil tycoon, turns his attention to capturing Timmy’s fairies and using their power to fuel his maniacal ambition.

iPhone Game Pad Makes Video Games Feel Good

I'm old school (or just plain old) and i like my buttons.  Touch screen is here and it will dominate in future, but there is something to be said for the arcade buttons.  Finally, someone has answered my prayers.

iPhone Game Pad is an iPhone case that slides on over the iPhone and lets you play arcade style games on your iphone. It has "four control buttons along with select, start and a pair of shoulder-buttons". It is the perfect thing for playing old Super Nintendo games. Now it is a prototype compatible with the first-gen iPhone, you can watch it in action after more.

"Enter the gPod, an iPhone case with integrated gaming control pad. Interfacing with the Apple 30 pin connector and providing tactile buttons in the conventional game pad layout, the iPhone Game Pad allows a massive library of arcade and console games to be ported to the iPhone and not lose that old school interface that people who grew up in the 80′s and 90′s enjoyed so much."

Is Wonder Woman having a mid life crisis?

First we got the new costume, which exactly zero people liked.

Now Diana Prince, is appearing in soft core porn films.

What's next?  A shotgun wedding?
