Green Lantern Bitch Slaps Superman

During the 2007-2008 season of the animated TV show, The Batman, in the episode “Ring Toss,” Robin meets Hal Jordan. And one of the first things he says is, “If you and Superman were ever in a fight, which one of you would win”

The scene throws into light the ongoing debate among comic book readers of just WHO would win the fight if Superman were to go up against Green Lantern.

The debate has been recently rekindled, thanks primarily to the “Sinestro Corps War”. In that story, fans on either side of the debate finally got to see an actual, prolonged slugfest between a Kryptonian (Superboy/Superman Prime) and the “ultimate Green Lantern” (Sodam Yat/Ion). Readers have latched onto the fight as evidence of what just would happen if fan favorites Superman and Hal Jordan were to go head-to-head.

Clearly, Hal would beat Superman in a fight.

Historically, it's pretty well established that Superman has a healthy fear of Green Lantern power.

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

- Second, at least some Green Lanterns (Hal Jordan and John Stewart, specifically) are capable of stopping Superman in his tracks if they have to.

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

The fight has already happened.  Superman went up against Hal Jordan as Parallax (in Zero Hour, or in Green Lantern #64 (1995), etc.). Parallax essentially had souped-up Green Lantern powers similar to Ion's. Not only that, those powers were wielded by Hal Jordan, who as a Green Lantern is the best of the best of the best ... In every confrontation between Superman and Parallax/Hal Jordan, Hal wiped the floor with Superman.

Thank you for playing.  Enjoy your walk Superman.

  1. On top of all that, the ring can filter yellow sunlight and turn it into red one.

  2. This confirms half of my thinking that GL and Martian Manhunter are the strongest guys in the DC Universe. So, what do you think :
    Hal Jordan vs. J'onzz J'onzz

    ?

  3. J'onn's telepathy would probably give him a bit of an edge; because it's speed of thought, but then Hal Jordan has a willpower the size of a transatlantic... I'd call that a pretty even match... even as a GL fan I can't say who'd win.

Martian Manhunter is truly an overpowered character; he's like DC's Sentry (only I don't hate him like I hate Sentry).

  4. Um, Superboy-Prime (who is equally as powerful as Superman) defeated the Green Lantern Corps by himself. And even in the Elseworlds comic Superman: Red Son, Superman was able to smash through the entire Green Lantern Marine Corps with no problem.

Hal might be able to get a good hit in here or there, but Superman is far more powerful. Even with sun-filtering,
Superman would have more than enough strength left over in his already-charged cells to bust through any construct that Hal could make.

Ultimately, it wouldn't even be a contest.

(Oh, and a Green Lantern's aura generally protects him from telepathic attacks, so I'd say Hal would win against J'onn. ;) )

  5. Nope, Superboy Prime is MORE powerful than New Earth Superman, way more powerful. And he and Superman defeat Green Lanterns because the plot needs it... not because they're actually stronger.

  6. nope. Action Comics Annual #3 in the Armageddon 2001 storyline. Guy Gardner tries to take out Clark. Clark's willpower overpowers the ring, making it reform on his hand. Instant Superman Lantern.

  7. That's BS, not only it's again story serving, but also, power rings do not work that way.... they're keyed to the individual.
