GFEST Must Buy Comic Books of the Week

Jeff Smith's fast paced sci-fi thriller about an inter-dimensional art thief continues in this action-packed graphic novel. The secrets of RASL's technology and his hidden past are exposed when a mysterious lizard-faced stranger starts killing the art thief's girlfriends in multiple universes.

GFEST View: As a HUGE fan of Bone, I picked up the first volume of Rasl.  I waited for the first trade knowing that the single issues were coming out on an irregular basis.  While it takes a little bit of commitment to become engaged in the plot and begin to understand the premise, I found by the end of Volume one, I was excited to pick up Volume two.

DC Comics is pleased to present Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver's Green Lantern Rebirth in the slipcased, Absolute format. Follow Hal Jordan on his journey from fearless test pilot to Super Hero, from villain to the spirit of vengeance, and finally, returning to his true calling as Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. This amazing Absolute edition includes Green Lantern: Rebirth #1-6, Green Lantern#1, the preview story from Wizard Magazine and a tale from Green Lantern Secret Files 2005 featuring spectacular artwork by Darwyn Cooke

GFEST View: I know, I know.  What is Gfest thinking? An Absolute Volume on the list?  We're not made of money.  We understand completely but this is a truly fantastic story with beautiful art that is riddled with Blackest Night innuendos.  Plus, holding an Absolute Edition in your hand is the closest thing to slow dancing with Megan Fox.  It's orgasmic!

Prepare for the ultimate behind-the-scenes experience from the event of the century!  With the creative minds behind Blackest Night as your tour guides, you'll marvel at hidden Easter eggs and meanings throughout the series in our director's commentary section. Discover shocking scenes that were left on the cutting room floor including actual script pages that were never drawn.  Be astonished at incredible never-before-seen designs from the best-selling event! Plus, many more exclusives that you'll witness within this mammoth special including an early look into BRIGHTEST DAY!

GFEST View:  We admit it!  We're suckers.  We know better than to waste $3.99 on this issue, but just like priests alone with alter boys we cannot help ourselves. Plus, Geoff Johns said at c2e2 this weekend that he would reveal a Deputy Lantern pick that didn't make the cut in this issue.

A Brightest Day tie-in! Exploding out of Blackest Night comes the next exciting chapter in the Green Lantern mythos: 'New Guardians'! Forced together during the rise of the Black Lanterns, Hal Jordan, Sinestro, Carol Ferris, Saint Walker, Atrocitus, Indigo-1 and Larfleeze must agree to disagree if their next mission is to succeed.  But when one of the strangest beings from Green Lantern's past returns, the future of the Lanterns and the universe at large once again falls into question.

GFEST View:  Buy it.  Geoff Johns.  Not much else to say.

Following the events of BLACKEST NIGHT, the brand new Justice League of America enters into Brightest Day with an arc featuring the Justice Society of America. The epic team-up begins with a character from the end of BLACKEST NIGHT joining the JLA. But when the storyline's over, what mysterious villain will be revealed - and which hero will switch teams?  A Brightest Day tie-in!

GFEST View:  Apparently, James Robinson died after he completed Starman because whomever has put pen to paper since couldn't write a classified ad.  You know this issue has to be awful to put the Brightest Day tie-in out there already.  Buy if you wish buy it, but don't say your friends at Gfest didn't warn you.

It's the final showdown! When N-RGX targets Superman and his Fortress of Solitude, Batman is left alone in space to go head-to-head with the most vicious of alien terrorists!

Gfest View:  I'll say it!  I like Superman Batman.  I know some runs have been better than the other.  This one being on the wrong side of better, but we all have our vices.

It has all led to this: The climactic battle for all the Mid-World! On one side, with their backs to Jericho Hill are Roland, his ka-tet and the surviving members of his father's Affiliation.  Arrayed against them, thousands of soldiers and slow mutants armed with the most horrific selection of weapons that the Good Man, John Farson could provide them.

Gfest View:   Peter David, Jae Lee, Stephen King, etc.  We loved these novels and we love these comics even more.  For you Gfest readers out there:  don't forget the face of your father!

  1. really excited about #53, and couldn't agree more with the Blackest Night Director's cut... nevertheless, they will be getting my money anyway, no use even fighting it.
