NYCC 10 - DC Releases Covers to Five Batman Titles

Here we go Batman fans.  Five Batman titles will be on sale from DC Comics in November. At the start of what the publisher promises to be a very Bat-heavy weekend at New York Comic Con, DC's The Source blog released a series of five new house ads spotlighting the new Gotham lineup of books from creators including Grant Morrison, J.H. Williams III, Tony Daniel, Scott Snyder, Jock, Yanick Paquette, David FInch and Amy Reeder. Check them out after the jump.

In addition to these five titles, DC presently publishes "Batman & Robin," "Batman: Streets of Gotham," "Gotham City Sirens," "Red Robin" and "Batgirl," among other books featuring the Dark Knight or other Gotham-based characters.

What is BATMAN: HIDDEN TREASURES?

From what I have gathered DC is is putting out yet another Batman solicit.  Apparently DC has Wolverine envy.

Ron Marz is apparently writing the story and Bernie Wrightson is doing the art.  Other than that, I am confused as what plot direction this book will utilize as it relates to the Batman universe.  Is it Bruce Wayne?  Is it Dick Grayson?  Is it an Elseworld Tale?  Is it set in DC Universe continuity?

If any has any answers it would be much appreciated.  I guess I am just overwhelmed (or underwhelmed) depending on the day.  DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN, BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, BATMAN: LONG ROAD HOME, SUPERMAN/BATMAN, BATMAN BEYOND, BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATMAN INC., and RED ROBIN to name a few.  It's a lot to keep track of as a Batman fan.

Supergirl and Damien Team-up in SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 and Why I am Starting to Like Damien Wayne

I will be the first to admit, I did not like Damien Wayne when he was introduced as a character into the Batman family. In my opinion, the Bat family was already too crowded with Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, Barbara, Stephanie, etc. I found Damien's character to be the Scrappy Doo or Kazoo of the Batman family.

Now, I am starting to come around about Damien. I like the dynamic he throws into the relationships in and around the Bat family. I especially love the tension between Tim and Damien. The writing of Damien by Grant Morrison Chris Yost and Fabian Nicieza is fantastic. Damien is smart, sharp and very quick witted. Damien's dialogue with Tim is funny and useful to help shape the story of the Bat family in the future. Don;t get me wrong my favorite part of any Tim and Damien encounter is still seeing Red Robin kicks Robin's little pompous butt around Gotham city.

That's why the recently announced team-up of Damien and Supergirl has me really intrigued. I can't wait to read the dynamic between the two. Especially, since Kara and Tim have such a good relationship.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 by writer Joshua Williamson puts the teenage Supergirl together with the talented but rather exasperating new Robin, Damian Wayne. Featuring art by Alé Garza, the issue shows the two heroes facing off against a threat that ties into Blackest Night.

When the issue showed up in October's solicitations, SUPERMAN/BATMAN #77 immediately caught the imagination of comics fans, who guessed at how the pair might interact. After all, they didn't get along so well during their brief encounter in Sterling Gates' World's Finest mini-series.

Will Tim Drake Eventually Become DC Comics Top Superhero?

Gfest is a HUGE fan of Tim Drake.  If you are as well, then prepare yourself for a geekgasm.  Eric Dietel at the DC Comics Fan Blog has written a beautiful recap of Tim's career, with some bold predictions for his future.  It begins here, and its well worth the read for both Tim Drake fans and fans of the DC Comics Universe overall:   

Tim Drake is a remarkable character. If he continues to grow and develop like he has since his introduction he will eventually become the most influential character in all of DC Comics. I am fully aware of the magnitude of that statement and I will try to support it.


Beginning

Tim Drake didn't show up in a typical superhero fashion. He suffered no early tragedy, he didn't possess any powers. He was simply a smart kid who loved Batman and Robin. In a lot of ways he's like many comic book readers out there. However he wasn't without special attributes, Tim Drake was then and is still today one of the smartest characters of all. As a young boy he did what no one else could do - uncover the identities of Batman and Robin, Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson respectively. He also purported the theory that Batman NEEDS a Robin to balance the darkness with light. A theory that goes a long way towards making the concept of Robin a lot less stupid than it might have originally been viewed.

Now, if you have ever spent anytime on Gfest you know we HATE the new Batman and Robin.  You also know that your loyal friend drafting this post have a love hate relationship with the author of this particular title.  He's my Tito Ortiz.  No matter how many bruises he gives me, I keep coming back.  With all that said, I am hopeful this issue will tie this story up and prepare us for the Return of Bruce Wayne, which releases next week. Tomorrow when I have fresh bruises, remind me to stay away from the Scottish Tito Ortiz.

I went into Blackest Night presuming I would dislike the series.  Can you blame me? After being disappointed by Infinite Crisis and being water-boarded by Final Crisis, I felt as everyone did after watching Superman Returns - WTF is this?  To my surprise, I enjoyed the Blackest Night Story - Geoff Johns and DC produced an event that was well planned and thought out.  Then comes Brightest Day with it's potpourri of characters, I could really give a Sh*#t about, trying to figure out why they were chosen.  I am going to stick with Brightest Day (despite being disappointed by issue #0) hoping the DC brass can get it right twice in a row.

Red Robin #12
Every single moment of the last year has led to this fight between Red Robin and Ra's al Ghul. Who has Ra's been talking to all this time in the shadows? Why was Lucius Fox so desperate to find Tim Drake? And why was Tim so certain that Bruce Wayne is alive in issue #1? All questions are answered.

That's why your friends at Gfest are the Dynamic Duo.  Christopher Yost has done a wonderful job with this series.  I cannot say enough about the the various story-lines throughout this series - search for Bruce, Ras Al Ghul, League of Assassins, Blackest Night Rasand Batman and Robin tie ins.  It has been a wonderfully well written and beautifully drawn ride.  The ride has been so good that it ALMOST made me forget that Dan Didio and Grant Morrison had Tim Drake F'd in the A.
