Thank God for Small Favors - General Zod NOT the Villain of Superman Reboot

General Zod NOT the Villain of Superman Reboot! Hurray!

So says newly crowned Superman director Zack Snyder.

An Italian website called BadTaste got the scoop when they spoke to Zach Snyder

Question: You were recently chosen as the director of Superman. What have you done to defeat other talented directors and what are you planning to do with this new version?

Zack Snyder: I'm not sure what I've done, it wasn't like a run race, which would have been easier to do. Anyway, I think that you have to do your best to describe this world and that the character of Superman needs to be relevant again, without disrespecting his mithology. That's my goal.

Question: The general Zod will be the villain of the movie or it's just a rumour?

Zack Snyder: For now it's just a rumor.

Zack, Warner Bros., DC Comics, etc, please do not cast Zod, be original!  We've suffered long enough.

Tom Hardy Cast as Mystery Character in BATMAN 3

Deadline reports that Tom Hardy is indeed up for a role in Batman 3 and he's already been hired by Warner Bros for a "lead role" in the sequel.

A while ago we posted a story on Gfest (Three Inception Stars Want to be The Riddler in Batman 3) that following the success of Inception, Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros were keen on hiring either Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon Levitt or Tom Hardy as The Riddler in Batman 3. Well, it would appear that Hardy has indeed been cast in the upcoming third installment of Nolan's Batman franchise!

Here is an excerpt from the report over at Deadline:
"I'm told that Hardy has been set by his Inception director Chris Nolan for a lead role in the next Batman film at Warner Bros. Insiders are keeping the role secret and won't even say if he's up for a villain role, but that seems a reasonable assumption."
Deadline is well known for being VERY reliable with these scoops and while this does not confirm that he'll play The Riddler, that might just be the lead role the site are talking about if that sources information was correct!

However, with recent rumours pointing to Killer Croc being the main villain in Batman 3, could that be the character he'll portray? Who else do you think Hardy would be a good choice for? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Batman 3 is set to be released on July 20, 2012!

Is This the World's Greatest Superhero Cake?

I understand that there is an entire subset of our culture that's really into fancy cakes.  I confess that I don't really understand that culture, but I've seen the TV shows dedicated exclusively to extreme cake design as I flip around the channels on my TV.

Maybe I should give them a second chance, because this cake is the coolest thing I've ever seen.  And how cool for Aquaman that he somehow made the cut.

The Making of The Walking Dead - 17 Minute Feature

It's like a Halloween came early this year!

Robert Kirkman's AMC series The Walking Dead is nearing its TV premiere date on Halloween night on AMC and gfest can't wait!  We've seen little clips and trailers that have all been awesome, but nothing compares to this new 17 minute behind the scenes feature.  Watching this should give you all the assurances you need that AMC and Frank Darabont are taking this project seriously and that they are doing it right.

The feature includes interviews with Darabont, where he talks about how AMC has had no problems with including a lot of extremely violent content in the show. This show sure looks like its going to blow people away, not to mention how many zombies will be blown away in the process.

If you've ever read The Walking Dead, you have to watch this behind the scenes video below and tell us what you think! But we are officially in love!

Sexy, Naughty & Slutty Disney Comic Book Characters - Round Three

The first collection of Sexy Disney Princesses was a huge hit, and why wouldn't it be? (See them HERE if you missed it).  The second in the series was even more popular (see them HERE).  And why wouldn't they be?  Getting to see Walt Disney's favorite female characters letting their inner freak out is pure genius.
So check out the latest creations in the third of our in-depth series, which features some special attention the to the World of Alice and her many Wonder lands.  Enjoy them in which ever way you think appropriate, and tell us which is your favorite.

New Green Lantern Action Figures Revealed Including Dex-Starr & Movie Version of Parallax

Action Figure Insider (best collector site on the net) reports that Mattel's DC Universe Classics line will be the first to capture the 3D characters from Ryan Reynold's "Green Lantern" film coming in 2011.

DCUC's Green Lantern Classics wave 2 will not only include lots and lots of comic toys, but also the film version of Parallax (which for now is just a silhouette, but in the future we will get a peak of fear as it will be portrayed in the movie).

Joining movie Parallax are Nautkelloi and Medphyll (one body with swappable heads), Red Lanterns Skallox and Night Lik, Sodam Yat, Star Sapphire, Varix and the best part of all is a VERY special 3-pack of mini-characters B'dg, Dex-Starr (may favorite Red Lantern) and Despotellis.

Interestingly, Night Lik is a brand new character created by toy makers the Four Horsemen. Geoff Johns named the new lantern, who will be appearing in an issue of the GL comic following its first appearance on toy shelves.

Parallax will be fully-revealed in the January issue of one of my favorite publications, ToyFare magazine.

DC Universe Online Character Creator Trailer is Simply Spectacular

Why DC and Sony do this to us is beyond me?  For the last few months they have plowed us with pictures and videos of this gorgeous game, but yet rip our heart out by delaying the release until 2011.  Today, they pull the most malicious move to date by releasing one of the best trailers for the game to date.  Enjoy the trailer for the character creator portion of DC Universe Online. Brainac, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, it doesn't get any better than this.  Enjoy! (via: Superhero Hype)

Is Sinestro a Member of the Justin Bieber Fan Club?

This is some very cool Sinestro artwork courtesy of the comic art gallery, and yet there is just one little thing that bothers us about it - the hair.

Sinestro has always been about the hair.  His receding hairline and moustache have been Sinestro's calling card since day one.  Yet here he's seems to be growing it out (and forward) to achieve the Justin Bieber look.  Could Sinestro be a closeted fan of the teeny bopper sensation?

Preview: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #5

I've waited a long-time for this day.  The real Batman, Bruce Wayne, finally returns home to Gotham after Darkseid sent him back in time via the Omega Sanction in FINAL CRISIS #6.

Tomorrow, Grant Morrison's highly anticipated Batman issue titled, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #5, featuring a noir-ish tale of the Dark Knight, as Bruce Wayne struggles to return to the modern day, aptly illustrated by the masterful Ryan Sook and Pere Perez.

Fox Orders NAPOLEON DYNAMITE Animated Series and Cartoon Comedy ALLEN GREGORY from Jonah Hill

Fox has just ordered two animated series outside of their go-to animation creators MacFarlene and Matt Groening as Vulture reports the network has ordered an animated series based on the surprise hit film Napoleon Dynamite and another animated comedy series called Allen Gregory featuring Jonah Hill.

With the Napoleon Dynamite animated series, Jon Heder and Efren Ramirez (who played Napoleon and Pedro respectively in the film) will use their vocal talents to reprise their roles along with most of the film’s major cast members as well.

At this time six episodes of the series have been ordered with Mike Scully (who used to work on The Simpsons) executive producing with the film’s original writers Jared and Jerusha Hess. It doesn’t look like Jon Heder will be escaping from his star-making, but heavily overexposed role anytime soon.

I cannot see this series being successful.  The movie was released in 2004 and six years is a long-time to make any spin-off let alone an animated television series.

On the other hand, I’m quite excited about the Allen Gregory an animated series which will have Jonah Hill voicing the titular role of a freakishly smart, internationally acclaimed 7-year-old kid who’s about to take on the task of attending elementary school with kids his own age.

Hill is executive producing and also writing the series with Hot Tub Time Machine screenwriters Andrew Mogel and Jarred Paul.

Both series will make their debut for the 2011-2012 TV season.

What do you think?  Napoleon Dynamite still explosive enough to be successful?  Will Jonah Hill's series be a hot?  Let us know.

Megan Fox Turns Down the Role of Wonder Woman. WTF?

Transformers babe and all around gfest fantasy girl Megan Fox allegedly rejected taking on the role of Wonder Woman.  What the hell was she thinking?

Sources say that Megan doesn’t want to don Wonder Woman’s costume because she has resolved to take on more serious movies.

“Megan has been linked to the role and there was an approach at one point but she’s not going anywhere near Wonder Woman,” says a source close to the star.  “She wants to move on to more serious roles.”

As if that plan isn't bat shit crazy enough, the 24 year old actress is also considering plans to have a temporary Hollywood hiatus and enter the Broadway scene.  “Theater really appeals to her. She has nothing lined up yet but she’s open to offers. She hopes to mix theater work with some smaller indy movies and only do big movies if they are right for her. Megan is desperate to get away from her Transformers image and move on with her acting career."
Megan Fox is crazy not to take the role, but then again, having followed her career closely, she is actually a little bit crazy.  Its part of what makes her so sexy.  Having said that, she's still only really known for her role in Transformers.  Don't you have to build up some sort of body of work before you make the leap to "serious" acting?  Her films outside of Transformers have all been complete bombs.

After putting out Jennifer's Body and Jonah Hex, plus getting herself fired from the third Transformers movie, Megan Fox should take what she can get at this point. Without her looks she is a nobody. She is not a great actress (she was once nominated for Worst Actress of the Year) and her odds of landing a serious role in a big budget film are low to say the least.

Megan, make this fanboy's wet dreams come true, and please reconsider.

Rumors about the Superman Movie Reboot

It was big news last week when it was revealed that Zach Snyder will direct the Superman Reboot.  Well now rumors are running rampant with many other"possible details" about the new Superman movie.

Here are the "rumors" being reported thus far:
  • The current title is Superman: Man of Steel (clever)
  • The very brief synopsis from the script is, "Clark Kent is a journalist traveling the world trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman." (sweet Jesus this is the best we could come up with?)
  • The movie is reported to be more of a Clark Kent movie, not a Superman Movie (WTF?).
  • Darren Aronofsky passed on the project because the script is a mess (posts above make it sound like it is still a mess)
  • Apparently, Warner Bros. picked Snyder for  the script because it was rushed, is still a bit of a mess, and that Warner Bros. needs someone who won't spend months or even years trying to get it just right (i.e. Aronofsky), (God forbid we get it right after the disaster we all suffered through by Singer)
  • The studio must have a new Superman movie in production by 2011 or they'll be subject to potential lawsuits by the heirs of the superhero's creators. (well it's not like WB has anybody on payroll that could help clean it up.  Geoff Johns?, John Byrne?, Mark Waid? Grant Morrison?, Dan Jurgens?)
  • David Goyer's script is said to involve series staple General Zod, famously played by Terence Stamp in the first two "Superman" pictures, and Callum Blue on recent episodes of "Smallville". (really Zod? He's been recycled more times than a plastic water bottle.)
  • Lastly, hopefully the woman pictured at the top of the page is in it (no confirmation yet)
Those are the rumors we have found thus far and we will continue to keep you posted if we hear any more rumblings about the reboot.

Let us know if you have any tidbits about the movie you would like to share or any ideas!

NYCC 10: DC Announces FLASHPOINT as Next Big Event. What is It?

After the announcement at NYCC 2010 that the next big Mega event for DC would be Flashpoint, I decided to do some research to determine what is Flashpoint?

If you recall DC and Geoff Johns teased us with a new series called Flashpoint in the first issue of The Flash.

After researching and reading numerous references to Flashpoint, I came across a post by Joey Esposito at Craveonline. Joey does a wonderful job of breaking down the teaser images for Flashpoint in the Flash #1 and analyzing other references to from DCU's history to form a hypothesis on DC's next big event.

Here is a summary of Joey's breakdown of Flashpoint:
So panel for panel, the first two are pretty obvious. Clock counting down. But the third panel is where things get interesting, with the Reverse-Flash costume coming out from Barry Allen's ring, where his usual scarlet costume is kept. Judging by the surprise on Barry's face, this is an unexpected occurrence. What's intriguing is the recent re-emergence of Eobard Thawne in The Flash: Rebirth, where we discover that Professor Zoom has been orchestrating Barry's life since childhood, from the death of his mother to his "resurrection" from the Speed Force.

Next up is Jay Garrick, Wally West and Bart Allen getting themselves rocked by the Speed Force, shades of Barry Allen back in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Combined with the panel above it, I think it's safe to say that some external force is messing with the Flashes, and perhaps even the Speed Force itself.
So, just what the hell could this all mean? Well, one important thing to note is a little series called... Flashpoint. In 1999, DC Comics released an Elseworlds story by the same name, which focused on a concept that involved Wally West uncovering the titular Flashpoint, which was a device that could be an entry into the Speed Force, let alone other realities. Of course Vandal Savage tries to overtake the device for his own purposes, including but not limited to a weird plot revolving around the JFK assassination. The reason that's relevant is a few words from this teaser: "if there is to be anything left of the past, present, and future, they must learn the secret of the Flashpont."
Could this Flashpoint be the same concept? In the Elseworlds tale, Barry Allen has dreams that represent other realities that can be accessed through the Flashpoint, including the DC Universe. Could our DCU be looking at a battle through time and across realities through this concept that was added to the DC lexicon some ten years ago?

If you add it up, it's possible. Consider:
  • Geoff Johns has brought Elseworlds into the main DCU before. Kingdom Come Superman anyone? The man is a master of dredging up DC history and making it new.
  • Johns has also used this same build up in another title of his. You know, that Green Lantern book. Both titles, thus far, have begun with Rebirth mini-series that lead directly into a brand new monthly ongoing, with a tease for a big story featuring said character. How do we know that in 6 years we won't look back on The Flash: Rebirth realizing all of the little plot points Johns had set up, like we are doing today with Green Lantern: Rebirth?
  • Every incarnation of the Big Three shown in the teaser isn't their natural state. A vampire Batman, war mongering Wonder Woman and militaristic Superman are all great fodder for an Elseworlds story or alternate Earth, some of which we've already seen. Could these twisted versions of our beloved DCU heroes be using the Flashpoint to invade our world, city by city?
  • Brightest Day, The Return of Bruce Wayne and Rip Hunter: Time Master all point to a renewed importance in the timestream aspect of the DCU. DC went so far as to say that Rip Hunter would have some clues implanted in it that lead right to DC's next big event.
Thanks to Joey and Craveonline for this wonderful theory on DC's next big thing, Flashpoint

What do you think Flashpoint is all about?  Do you even care about it?  Do you think rises to the level of a mega event?  Let us know?

Ten Brand New Batman Arkham City Screenshots

It's Christmas in Gotham!  Warner Brothers has released new screenshots, and a sweet profile of Harley Quinn from Batman: Arkham City, coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PCs in 2011.

Developed by Rocksteady Studios, Batman: Arkham City will take place within Arkham City, the new maximum security "home" for Batman's rouges gallery.  This highly anticipated sequel to what many consider the best comic book based video game ever developed, includes a new all-star cast of heroes and villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features.

Based on these screen shots alone, we can't wait.
